HISTORY OF STOKA THEATRE COMPANY

The STOKA theatre company was founded in January 1991 as a result of a long-lasting effort taken by the stage director Blaho Uhlár (1951) and the designer Miloš Karásek (1960) in the field of amateur and professional theatre. They both deeply felt the impotence of current theatres in their struggle for the search and transplantation of a new theatre vision as well as their unwillingness to reject the established creative methods and apply new ones. Since 1992 the group has performed at its stage in Bratislava where twenty two productions were premiered and 1000 performances have been staged up to October 2005. The created projects, including playwriting, were mostly the result of teamwork of all the theatre group members. The theatre poetic touches upon all spheres of often delicate and intentionally subtly anticipated relationships and moments of human existence which can only be expressed emotionally without any words. As far as the organization is concerned, the theatre group has not been recognized officially within 0the context of Slovak theatre and the state cultural bureaucracy has been unable, in the four years of the theatre°s existence, to find a way of subsidizing this markedly non-commercial ensemble. Thus, they have been constantly deprived of their life guarantees and the ensemble members often do not even receive any financial support in several successive months. Despite these difficulties, critics labelled the production of "Eo Ipso" (1994) the event of the year.
